Tea Rose Drabble – 8/22/11

Saturday morning is usually a time of rest and relaxation. First day of the actual weekend, when you are allowed to forget about school, forget about that awfully stupid thing you blurted out in your nap during 4th period geometry, and probably most importantly, forget that your time away is slowly ticking down, before you have return to do it all over again. It should be that way, should being the operative word, sadly the way you envision things to be, is not always how they turn out. Case and point, my bed, 8 am, one Saturday morning.

Our room strangely enough, was built without a single window, so for a night owl like me, this meant I could sleep in almost all hours of the day without ever worrying about being disturbed by the annoying and bright sunlight. Don’t be mistaken, I loved the sun, just not while I was sleeping.

Peacefully snoozing away, I was unaware that my dear twin sister was perched at the edge of my bed with her pillow in hand.

*smack*

“Wake up! Tea! You gotta wake up now!”

With an unsettling groan, I rolled over in my covers, pulling my pillow down over the back of my head. My hips sat high in the air, which caused my comforter to look like a makeshift tee-pee. Groggily I tried to vocalize my annoyance. “Misty, what in Berry’s name do you want?”

“He’s here!” She squawked in my ear.

This time to ensure I was fully awake, she rhythmically bounced at the end of my bed. My chin smacking into the mattress on each down swing.

“Whose here?” I moaned, my voice still sounding like a raspy version of my normal self.

“Her Dad.” She whispered.

I sat up, throwing off the covers. “OMB no way!”

“Yes, way! They are in the front yard right now. Guess Daddy said he couldn’t come in. Come on let’s go look.”

I rolled out of bed and slipped into my pink bunny slippers. Once I was upright Misty Rose took hold of hand and excitedly lead me through the kitchen to the front of the house, tip-towing the entire way. Stopping abruptly at the front door, we did our best to share the inconveniently thin pane of glass. We had only recently discovered that our youngest sister Cherry had a different father than the rest of us, a shock and scandal the likes of which we had never seen. And now only a few weeks later, daughter and father stood on our front lawn talking, while mother stood patiently by, an peculiar expression that I didn’t quite get, resting oddly about her face.

“She looks a lot like him” I remarked under my breath.

“Mhmm.” Misty agreed.

They looked incredibly sweet together. Cherry had always been one for outward affection, and it would seem that it was a trait that she had inherited from her father. Cherry bounced gleefully around the yard, while showing off her newly acquired ability to cartwheel. We heard him laugh a few times, commending her on her efforts, even the one time she managed to flip over backwards. It was easy to see his charm.

“So him and mom…”

I shot Misty a death glare. I didn’t want to think about that, but it was a hard fact to ignore when you watched how he and Mom did their best to avoid each others awkward glances. Once one noticed that the other was looking, they would quickly turn their gaze away. I could feel my nerves swimming in the bottom of my stomach. Thankfully before things got too heavy, he and Cherry walked to his car, got in, and drove away.

Mom started back toward the house and Misty and I scattered trying to get away from the door before she had a chance to realize we had been eavesdropping the whole time. We had both made it safely back to our room, by the time we heard the front door close. Mom’s soft footsteps walked through the kitchen and into her room. Her bed made a small squeak as she laid down upon it.

Now that the excitement was over, I fell back into bed.

“You’re going back to sleep?!” Misty pouted.

I yawned deeply. “Sure am. You got a problem with that?”

“But… Wait.” Misty paused. “Do you hear that?”

I opened my ears to listen carefully. All i could hear was the running of the air conditioner and my charmingly annoying sister hounding me about my sleep patterns. “I don’t hear anything.”

Misty walked to the far wall and pressed her against. “You’re gonna think I am crazy, but I swear I hear someone crying.”

I was already snuggled into bed by that time, so I pulled my covers over my head and prepared to return to my Saturday morning sleep..

“I’m sure it’s nothing.” I assured her.

Before she had a chance to argue. I was well on my way back to dreamland.

Misty always worried about the weirdest things, besides we had just seen mom and she was fine. What could have possibly happened in that short amount of time make her cry?

The crisp coastal air whipped across my bare arms, causing my entire body to instinctively flutter. The air outside my climate controlled vehicle, had been much less inviting than originally anticipated. My choice of dress only enforcing my miscalculation further. Stepping around and opening the drivers passenger side door, I reached into the floor board, and pulled my overnight bag up onto the seat. Rifling through my bag of various sundries, my fingers finally grazed upon my faded zip up hoodie. Gripping tightly I pulled it from the stack and then slipped it over my chilly exposed arms. Making sure to zip it up all the way to the top, to ensure that I kept the cool afternoon air from sneaking in. It was a sweltering a 104 degrees when I left Briocheport early that Friday afternoon. I had no idea it would be almost a full 35 degrees cooler in Coconut Bay.

Feeling much more insulated, I carried myself up the steps to the little green and white beach house. I waited around on the front porch for several minutes before ever attempting to ring the bell. Leaning way out to the side, so I could get a look at the green numbers pressed along the side of the house, I Checked the address a third time just to make sure I was at the right place. I had come to visit a couple times with Patina in the past, but it had been a while. Even then she had been the driver, so I was really taking a big chance of getting it wrong, and knocking on a perfect strangers house.

Well I obviously hadn’t driven 2 hours to stand on his porch, so I gathered my nerves and rang the bell. A moment later I heard shuffling from inside.

A female voice shouted down the stairs. “Melon!? Can you get that?! I’ve only got a towel on?”

“I got it!”

The door opened and my dear friend came into view, his beautiful eyes shining bright. Sparkling eyes that only seemed to light up more, at the realization of who was now standing on his step.

“Liv?! Hey! What are you are you doing here? Wow! This is a surprise.” He grinned wildly pulling me into a hug. I kissed the side of his cheek as he let me go.

“Needed to get away for a while.” I beamed. “Hope I’m not intruding. I was gonna call…”

“No! Of course not! Come on in.”

Melon opened the door wider and ushered me inside. Closing the door behind us, he showed me to the small sofa, while he ran into the kitchen. I heard a rustling in the fridge before he called into the living room. “Can I get you something to drink?!”

I leaned forward on the sofa, looking in the direction of the open doorway. “No I’m good thanks.”

“Ok, be back in two minutes! I gotta…” Walking briskly through the living room and passing me ever so briefly, Melon headed upstairs. “Talk to Licorice.”

I giggled at his giddiness and then leaned into the sofa, allowing myself to fully relax for the first time in several tense hours. I felt better already just being away from it all. Away from the fine pickle I had gotten myself into this time. Unfortunately the moment I started to think about the mess, I started to think about Tiber, and my stomach lurched. I tried again to push him out of my mind, but nothing I attempted had worked thus far.

To my great relief Melon came trampling back down the stairs only a couple minutes later.

“Sorry about that. Had to tell my room mate we had company. She is cool, but she needs a little bit of a heads up on these things.”

“Oh. I’m sorry, maybe I should have called.”

“No. She’s fine. Not to worry. So what brings you all the way up here Livi?”

I looked at him earnestly, doing my best to hide the “Tiber” that was written all over my face. “Just, needed to get a way. Clear my head.”
“Well this is the place for it. There is nothing more releasing then a nice walk down on the beach. Letting the waves crash in and out. They say the water is cleansing, helps you to see things more clearly.”

I rested my elbow on the arm of the couch, thoughtfully dropping my chin into my palm. “Now that… is exactly what I need right now.”

“Well then, how about we head down there right now?” He asked, already reaching for his sweater.

I nodded eagerly, and then Melon and I were headed out the front door and over to his beaten up van. Something I wasn’t quite expecting found me that night. Little did I know it would be more than the crashing waves and sand.

Blueberry Drabble – 8/20/11

I felt every heavy footstep as he stepped through the kitchen heading towards the living room. I memorized each careless movement, as he walked right out the front door, refusing to grant me one last bit of courtesy, by looking back. I didn’t stop him, I didn’t even make a sound. All I could do was think to myself, “I knew this was coming.” but in no way did my realization help to lessen the anguish.

The door slammed more violently than i had expected, causing my entire being to shudder in reply. Just like that he was gone. The man I had been married to for almost two decades. The father of my children. I couldn’t help but marvel at how easy it had been for him to drop the papers under my nose, and slide the pen into my hand. I knew things between us had been shaky, but never in my wildest dreams would I have ever chosen to abandon him or the children. He said he was unhappy, had been for many years. Guess it didn’t matter if I was devastated, as long as he got his way. The lack of concern hurt worst of all. How could the man I trusted, the one I would turn to in my hour of need, transform so quickly into the distant shadow that now rested so heavily over my undeniably brighter past.

I felt a prickle near the corner of my eyes, but I refused to cry. I grabbed the edge of the table and set all of my weight down upon it. Shutting my eyes tight, I begged them to hold back their tears. He wasn’t worth it. He didn’t deserve another single drop from me. Not now, not ever.
